Many years ago a series of wonderful coincidences led me to have a meeting with the Director of Development at The Metropolitan Opera in New York City. I was young, and my portfolio was pretty light, but she saw something in me that prompted her to give me a freelance assignment. Meanwhile, I knew nothing about direct mail, fundraising, or opera! However, sometimes when you have no idea what you’re doing, you are in the best position to have a true breakthrough. It turns out the simple two-color, four component direct mail piece I created broke records. Not just in the response rate, but in the average donation.
When I saw the power that a strong emotional letter could have, I was hooked. I had always been very creative, and I also had a head for business. Direct marketing satisfied both sides of my brain like nothing else. As my experience and expertise grew, so did my passion for direct marketing.
